Call for submissions for the international student exhibition:
Back to Square One
March 17 – April 5, 2012
Venue: PU Gallery, Student Centre, Zagreb
Call for submissions for the exhibition Back to Square one is open to all national and international students of graphic design and visual communications.
The title of the exhibition paraphrases the First Things First graphic designers’ manifesto published in 1964 and revisited in the year 2000. The manifesto was a reaction to the changes in the advertising industry, graphic design, economy and culture. It challenged all aspects of the designer’s profession and aimed to generate discussion between the design practice, design schools and institutions.
Today graphic design and visual communications form our everyday environment and thus education provides an important place for questioning the role of design and its social priorities. Communication itself is an inexhaustible source for experimenting and creating new meanings that raise questions of responsibility and influence of design. The aim of this exhibition is to question the forms and goals of projects that were created during designers’ formative years. The theme for the exhibition is not strictly defined so as to enable the selection and exhibiting processes to explore and debate themes, approaches and languages of the new designer’s practices.
Works submitted may be realizations, conceptual designs or designs made specifically for this occasion. The designs may be created in any medium and apply to any particular part of visual communications (illustration, photography, typography) or audio-visual media.
The selected works and their authors shall be presented at the exhibition as well as at the online version of the exhibition at www.zgraf.hr, and shall be published in the Zgraf 2012 catalogue.
Deadline for submissions is March 1, 2012.
